PHMB overview

> PHMB or PHMBG are the acronyms for PolyHexaMethylene Biguanide & Guanidine.

> PHMB P20 D, our standard product, is a 20%-PHMB solution, under its hydrochloride form, which general formula can be drawn as follows :

“n” (biguanides) being included between 12-31 and “m” (Guanidine) between 2-11.

> Biguanide and Guanidine groups are the active part of the PHMB.

Compared to other Biguanide compounds, the fact that Biguanide and Guanidine groups are in a polymer and separated by C6 aliphatic hydrocarbon chains gives this substance a particularly high efficacy on a wide range of microorganisms.

Its hydrochloric form implies PHMB has cationic properties.

> PHMB is not a Quaternary Ammonium Compound (QAC) but gives good synergetic disinfection solutions when blended with QACs.

> CAS Registry Number of PHMB :

PHMB is described by several CAS Registry Numbers, depending on its final form (hydrochloride or not), its polymerization precursors, ...

Paréva’s PHMB was initially notified under CAS [91403-50-8] and switched to [32289-58-0] for administrative reasons.

Since 2017, European Authorities stated that this substance is better described by CAS [1802181-67-4].
